Why patients come to Bangkok for hip replacement
For hip replacement, the case for Bangkok is access and setting, not price. Hip packages here sit closer to home-country private pricing than the knee packages do, and we will not pretend otherwise. What Bangkok offers is a fixed surgery date without a waiting list, a written package price before you commit, an orthopaedic specialist hospital option, and a robotic-assisted direct anterior programme with the implant included in the quoted price.
If you are weighing this against private surgery at home on cost alone, do that arithmetic honestly: once flights and a recovery stay in Bangkok are added, the difference may be modest. The patients this suits best are those who value the timing, the specialist setting or the approach on offer. The cost page covers how to budget the whole trip.
The two hip packages
| Hospital | Procedure | Price (THB) | Approx. AUD | Approx. GBP | Approx. USD | Implant |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| KDMS Hospital | Robotic hip replacement (direct anterior approach) (MAKO) | 511,580 | 20,464 | 10,232 | 15,348 | Included |
| Bumrungrad International Hospital | Total hip replacement | 425,200 | 17,008 | 8,504 | 12,756 | Not included |
The Bumrungrad total hip replacement price of 425,200 THB does not include the implant. The implant is a significant additional cost and your written quote will state it. Do not compare this price directly with packages that include the implant.

Want the figure for your own case? A written quote confirms the price, inclusions and exclusions before you commit to anything.
Read the implant column before comparing these two figures. The Bumrungrad total hip replacement at 425,200 THB does not include the implant: the implant is a significant additional cost on top of that price, and your written quote will state it. We do not estimate the implant cost because no verified figure exists. This is the only one of our seven packages that excludes the implant.
The KDMS robotic-assisted hip replacement at 511,580 THB includes the implant. KDMS publishes its package contents: Stryker implant components from the United States plus all necessary surgical equipment, a standard inpatient room, nursing, hospital services, meals and equipment charges.
The robotic-assisted direct anterior approach
The KDMS package uses the MAKOplasty robotic platform with a direct anterior approach: the surgeon reaches the hip joint from the front of the thigh rather than the side or back, guided by a plan built from a CT scan of your hip. The surgeon performs the operation; the robotic arm guides it to the plan.
As with robotic knee surgery, be wary of outcome claims. The honest summary of robotic joint replacement evidence is more precise component positioning, without proven superiority in long-term function. Whether the direct anterior approach suits your anatomy is a judgement your surgeon makes at assessment.
Where it is done
KDMS Hospital is Thailand's first hospital dedicated exclusively to bone and joint conditions, founded by orthopaedic surgeons and rehabilitation doctors, with the robotic hip programme. Bumrungrad International Hospital, JCI-accredited since 2002, offers the conventional total hip package within the largest international patient infrastructure of our three partners. Both are covered in detail on the hospitals page.
Who this is not right for
Patients whose main motivation is a large saving over home-country private prices: for hips, that saving may not materialise once the trip is costed. Patients with significant other medical conditions may also be better served by a multispecialty setting or by surgery at home; that is assessed honestly before anything is booked. And as with every procedure we coordinate, package prices assume a straightforward case, and complex cases are quoted individually.
Recovery and going home
Early mobilisation begins soon after surgery, with in-hospital physiotherapy through your stay and outpatient sessions after discharge. You stay in Bangkok until your surgeon clears you to fly. UK guidance suggests waiting around three months before long-haul flying after a joint replacement because of blood clot risk; discharge typically includes a fitness-to-fly assessment, anticoagulation, compression and an in-flight movement plan. The timing is set by your surgeon, not by the package.
What the package covers if a complication occurs is set out in the package terms, not the headline price. Get written answers before paying a deposit; the complete guide lists the exact questions.
FAQ
Is the implant included in the price?
In six of our seven packages, yes. The one exception is the Bumrungrad total hip replacement at 425,200 THB, which excludes the implant and will cost more once the implant is added. Always check implant inclusion before comparing two prices, because it is the largest single component that hospitals vary on.
Am I a candidate?
That is decided by assessment, not by a website. Send recent X-rays and your medical history and the orthopaedic team will tell you. Factors that affect the answer include the stage of joint damage, what non-surgical treatment you have already tried, and other medical conditions that affect surgical risk.
What implant will be used?
KDMS publishes that its packages use Stryker implant components from the United States. The other hospitals confirm the implant in your written quote. Ask for the brand and model in writing. Registry survivorship data is published per implant, so knowing the model means you can look up how it has performed.
When can I fly home after surgery?
UK guidance suggests waiting around three months before long-haul flying after a joint replacement, mainly because of blood clot risk. International patients treated in Bangkok are typically assessed for fitness to fly by their surgeon before discharge, prescribed anticoagulation, fitted with compression stockings and given an in-flight movement plan. The timing is set by your surgeon, not by the package. Plan for the longer stay your surgeon recommends.
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, and read the terms carefully. Many standard travel policies exclude planned medical treatment abroad and any complication arising from it. Check specifically whether your policy covers you for treatment you have travelled for, and what happens if you need to extend your stay.
