Bumrungrad International Hospital: Knee Replacement
Last updated: September 2026
JCI-accredited since 2002
Overview
Bumrungrad International Hospital, founded in 1980 on Sukhumvit Soi 1 in central Bangkok, was the first hospital in Asia to receive Joint Commission International accreditation, in 2002, and received its seventh JCI re-accreditation in January 2024. It is the largest and most internationally recognised of our three partner hospitals, and the name an international patient is most likely to have already heard.
The hospital states it treats over 1.1 million patients a year, including more than 520,000 international patients from over 190 countries, supported by what it describes as more than 200 on-site interpreters. Those figures are the hospital's own.
The hospital performs the surgery. Medidash Global handles everything around it: the surgeon assessment from your own X-rays, a fixed written quote with inclusions and exclusions stated, visa and travel guidance, airport transfers, hotel near the hospital, an English-speaking coordinator with you in Bangkok, and follow-up coordination once you are home. The hospital does not provide these. There is no extra cost to you for arranging your treatment through us.
The orthopaedic department
Bumrungrad operates a dedicated arthritis and joint replacement centre. The hospital states its arthroplasty team has performed over 2,000 joint replacements with more than 15 years of experience, and that it uses the Stryker MAKO robotic platform for knee replacement. Telemedicine consultation before you travel is available.
We do not name surgeons on this site. At assessment you will know who is operating before you commit, and you can ask for their experience, annual volume and revision rate.
Packages at Bumrungrad
| Hospital | Procedure | Price (THB) | Approx. AUD | Approx. GBP | Approx. USD | Implant |

| Bumrungrad International Hospital | Total hip replacement | 425,200 | 17,008 | 8,504 | 12,756 | Not included |
The Bumrungrad total hip replacement price of 425,200 THB does not include the implant. The implant is a significant additional cost and your written quote will state it. Do not compare this price directly with packages that include the implant.

Want the figure for your own case? A written quote confirms the price, inclusions and exclusions before you commit to anything.
The robotic-assisted knee replacement at 647,000 THB includes the implant. The total hip replacement at 425,200 THB does not include the implant: it is a significant additional cost on top of that price and your written quote will state it. This is the only one of our seven packages that excludes the implant. Details on the hip replacement page.
Bumrungrad does not publish its package contents or inpatient stay; your written quote states both. The cost page lists what packages of this type generally cover and the universal exclusions.
Before choosing the robotic option, read the honest evidence summary on the robotic-assisted knee replacement page: better alignment across 21 randomised trials, no proven functional advantage yet, and a roughly 200,000 THB premium over the standard operation at KDMS.
What patients say
We publish only consented patient stories, and our one consented patient, Steven Parker, was treated at KDMS. His story is on the KDMS page. If a Bumrungrad patient consents in writing in future, their story will appear here.
Location and getting there
Bumrungrad is on Sukhumvit Soi 1 in central Bangkok, near BTS Nana and BTS Ploenchit, with hotel accommodation immediately adjacent to the hospital. Airport transfers from Suvarnabhumi and accommodation booking are part of Medidash Global's coordination.
International patient support
The hospital runs a medical coordination office for international patients, and states it operates a one-price policy with no foreign patient surcharge. Alongside the hospital's services, Medidash Global's English-speaking coordinator is with you from airport arrival through surgery, recovery and departure.
Who Bumrungrad is right for, and who it is not
Right for: patients who want the most internationally recognised name, the largest facility and the most extensive international patient infrastructure of the three, and who are comfortable with the highest price point.
Not right for: patients for whom price is the deciding factor. The same robotic platform is available at KDMS at 510,000 THB against 647,000 THB here, and the standard operation starts at 283,000 THB. If price leads your decision, start there, and we will say the same at assessment.
The full clinical picture is in the complete guide to knee replacement in Bangkok, with every package on the cost page.
FAQ
Are the hospitals accredited?
Bumrungrad International Hospital has held JCI accreditation since 2002 and received its seventh re-accreditation in January 2024. Phyathai 2 Hospital is JCI-accredited since 2014 and part of the BDMS network with an international patient centre. KDMS is Thailand's first hospital dedicated exclusively to bone and joint conditions, which is a specialty credential rather than an international accreditation.
Is the implant included in the price?
In six of our seven packages, yes. The one exception is the Bumrungrad total hip replacement at 425,200 THB, which excludes the implant and will cost more once the implant is added. Always check implant inclusion before comparing two prices, because it is the largest single component that hospitals vary on.
Is robotic knee replacement better than conventional?
The evidence supports better precision, not better outcomes, at least so far. A 2025 analysis of 21 randomised trials covering 2,692 patients found robotic-assisted surgery achieved better mechanical alignment than conventional surgery, but did not show superior short to medium-term functional outcomes, and took longer in theatre.
Will I know who my surgeon is before I travel?
Yes. Your assessment is carried out by the orthopaedic team at your chosen hospital, and you will know who is operating before you commit. You can ask for the surgeon's experience with your specific procedure, their annual volume, and their own revision rate.
